One design challenge for this B58 Intake system is the location, it is just next to the exhaust manifold which rapidly heat soaks this position in the engine bay.High air intake temperatures are terrible for the engine performance as the turbo would have to build boost with hot, less dense air. This is why a fully sealed intake system is the only way to go to ensure IAT’s are kept to a minimum. To eliminate hot air from being drawn into the air filter we designed a heat shield and lid that together with rubber sealings makes our system feed the engine with nice cold air. Our intake system uses the OE fresh air inlet duct that feeds the air filter with fresh air.As replacement to the OE plastic intake pipe, we designed a large 85mm (3,3”) mandrel bent aluminum pipe which expands to 93mm (3,7”) towards to the turbo inlet elbow. We didn´t take any shortcuts when we designed the inlet pipe, we sourced the unusual size of 85mm to get the correct inner diameter for the MAF-sensor. Many competitors sell kits with 89mm (3,5”) inlet pipes which is easy to source. But the danger with 89mm pipe is that the MAF-reading will be wrong and therefor causing the fuel mixture to be lean. It is not uncommon to get CEL (Check Engine Light) with such setup. Fitted to our intake pipe is a large custom-designed air filter. The filter has a densely knitted cotton gauze for superior filtration. The filter is of course washable and reusable for optimum performance and long service life.The original air filter box and turbo inlet hose are designed with elements that minimize the noise produced by the turbo and the air induction. Enhance your B58 Gen 2 engine's performance with the do88 Performance Front Mount Heat Exchanger!B58 engine compared to the F80 M3/M4 S55The B58 engine shares similarities with the S55 engine found in the F80 M3/M4 models, as both engines have a water-to-air charge cooler paired with heat exchangers (water radiators) in the front of the car. These radiators cool the water flowing through the charge air cooler, the water dissipate heat from the charge air before it enters the engine. The main difference lies in the B58's liquid-to-air charge cooler design, which is integrated into the intake manifold, while the F80 S55's cooler is a separate unit mounted on top of the engine.Challenges of the B58 Charge Air Cooling System A common issue with tuned B58 engines is the rapid heat soaking of the charge air cooling system, particularly during track days. High intake air temperatures will make the ECU to reduce power output or put the car into limp mode. Even spirited street driving can prompt the ECU to pull timing and decrease power output due to high intake temperature.Our SolutionIt is evident that this system needs increased cooling capacity to prevent heat soaking. Part of or solution is our do88 Performance Front mount heat exchanger. The do88 Performance Front Mount Heat Exchanger is designed to provide increased cooling capacity, preventing heat soaking. do88 complete performance air intake system designed for an easy drop-in-fitment in your BMW M2C / M3 / M4 F8XThe S55 turbo engine that powers the BMW M2C / M3 / M4 F8X has two air filter boxes that feeds the turbos with fresh air. The OE air filter boxes has panel filters that are quite small and therefore quite restrictive for the air flow.Our goal when designing our new intake system was that it must be enclosed, so it does not draw hot air from the engine bay which many aftermarket intake systems do. If the intake system draws hot air from the engine bay it is directly equated with warmer charge air (higher IAT). During all test we have carried out during the development of our entire BMW F8X M2C/M3/M4 product range we see clearly how the power band is directly equated with the IAT (Intake Air Temperature) and turbo inlet restriction.When designing our upgrade intake system, we started with 3D-scaning the engine bay on our M3 Competition. This gave us an exact 3D-model of the available space to design our intake system in. We found that we could use large double cone BMC air filters with large filtering area for high flow not just when new (small filters starts to flow worse after short usage). We could also use 3” (76mm) tubing which we designed with as few and smooth bends as possible to reduce the air flow restriction. To eliminate hot air from being drawn into the air filters we designed heat shields and lids that together with rubber sealings makes our system feed the engine with nice cold air.Our intake system uses the OEM fresh air inlet ducts that feeds the air filters with fresh air from the grille. We have tested these, and they are not a restrictive part in this system and with the pressure zone that builds up behind the grille at speed adding scoops will not make much of difference.Our intake pipes are manufactured in 76mm (3”) mandrel bent seamless aluminum pipes. Both the intake pipes and heat shields are finished with a tough matte black structure powder coat. For the air box lids we went for a design made in a lightweight polycarbonate material with a nice satin black finish.All these improvements have resulted in an impressive +10 hp top power gain and in the mid-range RPM we see up to +20 hp / + 40 Nm. This test was performed on our M3 with a BootMod3 Stage 1 (93) tune.Significant advantages with do88 performance intake system (stock comparison numbers):- +10 hp peak power gain!- +20 hp / + 40 Nm increase in the mid-range RPM!- 769CFM air flow at 0,025bar/0,36psi pressure drop (678 CFM), do88 13 % higher!- The BMC filters are regenerable for long life!- Improved intake sound!
